Local Lutheran Church Recognized for Public Welcoming Statement

Rochester, New York, December 4, 2012

The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word has been recognized by ReconcilingWorks (formerly Lutherans Concerned/North America) as the most recent Reconciling in Christ congregation in the Rochester area.  This recognition comes after the congregation officially adopted a public statement of welcome for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  The statement reads in part,

“The Lutheran Church of the  Incarnate Word, a Reconciling in Christ congregation, opens wide its doors to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, their partners and their families, and those who may have been excluded because of other distinctions such as race, economic status, ability, age or station in life…”

The Rev. Douglas Stewart, Co-Pastor of Incarnate Word sees this statement as “a long overdue step in living out the biblical mandate of doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly with God.”

The Reconciling in Christ recognition means that the congregation will be listed on a roster of congregations, organizations and synods in the United States and Canada, which publically welcome members of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Emily Eastwood, Executive Director of ReconcilingWorks said, “We are deeply grateful for this grace filled gesture by The Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word.  Their witness and leadership is a beacon of hope for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and the next step on the path to reconciliation and healing within the church and society.”

ReconcilingWorks is a Christian ministry affirming God’s love for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  Reconciling in Christ is a program of ReconcilingWorks.
